There are many natural things you can do to help control fleas that are safe and effective. I want to give you a little background on the flea and easy tips you can do to help control them, naturally.
An adult female flea can lay up to 50 eggs a day! These eggs are not sticky and usually fall to the ground in our yards and homes. Fleas can multiply very rapidly and you can have a serious flea infestation before you know it!
Below are 9 easy things you can do that will help ensure that you can keep these nasty critters from living on your dog and invading your home.
1. Keep your Dog Healthy
A healthy dog rarely gets a full blown flea infestation. Feeding a high quality diet with added garlic and brewers yeast is a great start to fending off fleas.
2. Give your dog a bath
A weekly bath using a natural flea control shampoo will help drown any fleas that might be living on your dog. Make sure you start from your dogs head and work your way down towards the tail.
3. Groom him from head to tail
Using a flea comb can help you trap and kill any fleas living on your dog. You can use the flea comb daily, weekly, or monthly depending on your dogs needs. Make sure you get a bowl of hot, soapy water to dip the comb in to drown any fleas you might find.
4. Use a good spray to keep em at bay.
Use an all natural flea control spray made specifically for dogs every time your dogs goes out. This will help make your dog undesirable to any critters lurking outside.
5. Make it laundry day.
This is very important! Washing your dogs bedding once a week in hot water and drying on high heat will kill fleas and their eggs.
6. Suck them up.
You can easily suck up flea eggs with a good vacuuming. Remember to concentrate on cracks and crevices in your rugs and furniture. Doing this regularly, at least once a week will help interrupt the fleas life cycle. If your dog regularly travels in your car make sure you vacuum your car as well!
7. Steam Clean your carpets
This is a great spring cleaning tip. Steam cleaning your carpets right before the weather warms up will ensure your carpets are flea free!
8. Use worms in your yard.
If you think you have a yard infestation you can nematodes, microscopic worms that prey on larvae and pupa of many insects, including fleas. Nematodes are available at pet and garden stores. Just follow the instructions and pay particular attention to shady areas of your yard where fleas thrive.
9. Mow and water your lawn.
Keeping your grass short will help the sunlight reach the ground below which can kill flea eggs with the heat. Regularly watering your lawn will also help drown the little buggers.
